As an ABC Board, we turn profit from liquor sales into impactful investments in state & local government, alcohol law enforcement, local nonprofits, and students in New Hanover County.

Local Distributions

Through the responsible sale of liquor, we’ve generated over $72 Million in profit distributions to county and municipal government over the last 10 years. Our local government beneficiaries include New Hanover County, City of Wilmington, and Towns of Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach.

New Hanover County: $3,865,459 + $151,887 Rehabilitation Tax
City of Wilmington: $2,406,081
Wrightsville Beach: $772,245
Carolina Beach: $669,628
Kure Beach: $25,304

Wrightsville Beach ABC Store: 75% to town general fund, 25% to NHC general fund
Carolina Beach ABC Store: 75% to town general fund, 25% to NHC general fund
Wilmington ABC Stores: 50% to city general fund, 50% of to County general fund
Kure Beach: Kure Beach does not have an ABC Store. Distributions are calculated based on sales to businesses operating in Kure Beach.
Stores outside of city limits: 100% to NHC general fund

Distributions are calculated as a percentage of profits legally designated for this purpose.

Community Health &
Wellness Grant Program

In 2021, we created a grant program for nonprofits working to reduce the impact of alcohol and substance use in New Hanover County. Since then, we’ve written over $3M in grants to more than 10 local nonprofits.

Scholarship Program

In 2022, we created a scholarship program for graduating high school Seniors in New Hanover County. Applicants write a research essay on the dangers of underage drinking and carry out a plan to share their findings with peers.
